Losing a tooth can turn a simple natural act of smiling into a source of embarrassment and discomfort. You start thinking twice before smiling or even talking when your smile is damaged in any way. Whether caused by decay, trauma, or age-related factors, the absence of teeth would affect your everyday life and long-term well-being. Complete and partial dentures are among the treatments we consider for our patients with missing teeth, especially if for some reason they can’t get dental implants. They are removable appliances designed to replace missing teeth in the upper, lower, or both jaws.
What are complete and partial dentures?
Dentures are removable prosthetic replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two different kinds of dentures: complete and partial. Whether you are missing all your teeth or some, these personalized dentures are crafted to fit comfortably into the gaps and mimic the natural look of teeth.
Complete dentures
There are two types of complete dentures: conventional and immediate dentures. If we are doing the conventional dentures, we remove your damaged teeth, let your gum tissue heal, and place your dentures in place just like immediate dentures but with a little twist: the waiting process in the middle takes eight to twelve weeks. However, they are more durable and comfortable giving you a solution that’ll last for a lifetime.
Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are made in advance and can be placed in as soon as the teeth are removed. Thanks to immediate denture treatment, you won’t be toothless during the healing period. But we will need to make many adjustments to fit them properly during the healing process, and we only consider them a temporary solution due to their nature.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures are dental bridges consisting of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base connected by a metal framework. They are used when you have natural teeth remaining here and there. Partial dentures fill in the spaces and prevent other teeth from shifting, changing their position, and eventually changing the shape of the face.
Is it better to get full dentures or partials?
Missing teeth is not something you can underestimate. Your physical and psychological health can take great damage in the long run. To avoid these negative consequences you should take action. By going through an examination and consultation with our team, you can decide on what is the best method to proceed with in your case.
Complete and partial dentures are among the treatments we use for missing teeth. We usually go with one of them according to that patient’s situation. If you have good oral health and only need a few teeth replaced, then partial dentures are what we go for. However, if you are suffering from multiple missing teeth and some gum disease, then a full denture is what we recommend.

Aftercare for Complete and Partial Dentures
For the first couple of days, you need to wear your dentures all the time to ensure everything is working smoothly. After you recover from this phase, you need to leave them out overnight to allow your gums to rest. You need to clean them weekly by soaking them in a cleaner. If you are using partial dentures, you need to get your teeth cleaned up every three months, so you can maintain good oral health.
How much do dentures cost?
Depending on the quality of the dentures, complete and partial dentures can cost between $300 and $8.000 in the UK and USA. Yes, it is a very wide range, but the treatment depends on many factors that prevent us from giving you a precise price. FAQ
Will eating with new dentures be difficult?
Eating after getting new dentures may be a little uncomfortable at first. To be more comfortable with your new set of teeth, start with liquids and soft foods cut into small pieces. As you get used to it more and more every day, slowly go back to your normal diet but still avoid bony, sticky, and hard foods.
Will dentures change how I speak?
Practice makes it perfect. With time, you will get used to speaking with your dentures, and it will be just like before. However, if you feel your dentures clicking somehow while you are talking or feel it is uneven while standing still, you should get it checked.
Do I have to use my dentures all the time?
It depends on your case, but we will probably ask you to wear your dentures all the time during the first several days to ensure everything is exactly as it’s supposed to be. Once we are sure there are no problems, you should start removing your dentures before going to bed, to allow gum tissues to rest.
